How to succeed doing remote work

Working remote 101

If you want to succeed when you are working from home, there are a few things that you are going to need to know about remote work. I am going to do my best to cover as much as I possibly can in this post.

Firstly; if you want to succeed, then you need to know how to market yourself. Working remotely can take on many forms. However, for this discussion, we are going to assume that you are a freelancer. When you are in a ‘normal’ job, it is likely that work will just fall into your lap. This is because your employer would have already done all the grunt work. They are the ones carrying out the marketing and networking. When you work for yourself, on the other hand, it is your responsibility to get the cogs turning. It is your responsibility to ensure that business continues to come in. You need to know how to advertise yourself. I am not going to go into depth on how you can do that in this post, but stay tuned for a piece that covers pitching the perfect personal pitch. There are plenty of things that you will need to think about and a million more that you could worry about. However, if you are marketing yourself properly, you are already well on your way to succeeding when you work from home.

Worth your salt?

You also need to be talented. If you are not talented, you are going to find it exceedingly difficult to drum up any business at all. Discovering one’s talent is probably the most challenging thing for many, while for some, this is not a problem. Nevertheless, it is important to remember to charge what you feel you are worth. Many freelancers fall into the trap of undercharging for their services. If you do this, then you are going to find it tough to make ends meet. You will constantly be working yourself to the bone. Here is a list of top paying remote jobs, though not exhaustive, it does show that working remotely can be quite lucrative. One of the true joys of freelancing is being able to set your own hours. The last thing you want is to undercharge for your services and be working 22 hours a day just so that you are able to put food on the table, right?

Avoid Distractions

Perhaps one of the greatest difficulties of working from home is that you will be faced with all manner of distractions. If you are not careful, you will end up playing catch-up most of the time as a result of these distractions. This can have a massive impact on your productivity. I suggest that you try the following to minimize the distractions:

    • If you do not need the internet (unlikely but possible) to run your business, turn that off. If you do need, try to avoid activities that are not work-related.
    • Try to have set working hours. They can be whatever you want. However, it is so important that you work during those hours. If something is not related to working, you should not be doing too much of it! Copious amount of discipline is needed to achieve this.
    • Have a dedicated area where you can work. It should be free of distractions. Tell your family not to disturb you during your ‘working’ hours, they will understand (I hope).

Got It!

If you put those three tips into practice, I am positive that you are going to be successful working from home. The distractions are the real things that trip people up mostly. As long as you continue to focus and work hard, and stay as far away from the couch as possible, you will be golden. Don’t forget to browse available remote work opportunities on this site. Good tips, I actually know some people who work way harder from home than they did working out of an office. You tend to be more productive too, in my opinion at least.
